ALC CPD Programme for 2008/09 begins October 23rd with 'The Arts and Wellbeing'
With the approach of the new academic year the ALC CPD program for 2008/09 will be commencing soon. The first event sees the return of last year’s successful ‘Arts and Wellbeing’ seminar. This time the event will take place in Cumbria, at the Rheged Centre in Penrith, on Thursday 23rd October. It is a great venue and the event should be well worth the trip even for those a bit further away from Cumbria. Also delegates from ALC member authorities/organisations are entitled to a subsidised place at £25. The standard price is £75 and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please see the events page for further information and booking details.

Community Cohesion CPD programme

Art and Citizenship project
CapeUK has developed an innovative Arts and Citizenship project that uses the current Asia Triennial exhibitions at the Cornerhouse and Castlefield galleries in Manchester to explore how we see ourselves, others, our communities, and communities other than our own. Abraham Moss High School from Manchester and Helsby High School from Cheshire are the participating schools.

An exhibition documenting the project will be displayed in Manchester and Cheshire venues in Autumn 08 – details to follow.

Cultural Offer
The DCSF announced further details regarding the cultural offer on Thursday. Each child will have access to "at least five hours of high-quality culture per week". This will include the chance to attend performances of Theatre, Dance and Music, coupled with more opportunities to discover their own talents.

Children's Secretary Ed Balls and Culture Secretary Andy Burnham launched this latest aspect of the recently-announced Children's Plan at the Young Vic Theatre, in south London. The scheme will initially be piloted in 10 areas across England, with local authorities being invited to bid to take part. The news has been greeted with a degree of welcome, although there is clearly more detailed planning to come, particularly in relation to how this time will be balanced both within the curriculum and as extra-curricular activity.

Learning Outside the Classroom
The ALC's partner organisation Cape UK has completed its work on Learning Outside the Classroom, with the resulting report due for presentation shortly. The investigation was carried out on behalf of the Arts Council and as part of the process we aimed to gauge the views of those working in the arts, education and other relevant sectors, regarding the assurance of quality in children's learning outside the classroom. In this regard the team would like to thank all those who gave interviews and completed the survey.
